Normally, I have a very productive twitter/facebook/linkedin presence. Usually, I am on daily, forwarding this, commenting on that, and generally voicing my concerns over climate, methane, treatment of nurses, or bullying. Something changed. I accepted a full time contractor position. I enjoy the work. It is interesting and I have been able to focus my attention on a manual revision and two POIs (Plan of Instruction). The entire program has elements I absolutely enjoy – lean principles, six sigma, continuous process improvement plans, everything I loved to evaluate during my Baldrige time. The program starts with culture change and the workflows they will implement will create a systematic process on medical data collection for service member evaluation and treatment.
I have been busy. After working solo for five years with only dogs, cats, and a husband to interrupt me, I am working in a large, open office with nine other people. It is a change for me. I know how to find that sweet spot of focusing on the work. When I do that, I am in my happy place. It requires headphones and my back turned away from the group, but it is the only way to concentrate for me.
In the meantime, as I continue to work during the day, you will see many short comments or I will forward good articles on climate change, occupational and environmental health nurses, and how to improve work environments psychologically and physically. And, if invited out, I will talk about my work on healthcare and workplace bullying. We all need to improve on how we communicate at work. And, it starts with me.
